For the first two years of my college experience, I was afraid to take risks. I never really thought that I would accomplish much, and here I am doing everything that I love. I learned from amazing supervisors who pushed me and supported me that sometimes you just have to go for it. Screw the risks, benefit analysis, and everything that we do to psych ourselves out of things that we actually want to do.
I have learned through an internal battle with myself that not everyone is going to approve my decisions, but the only person I should be trusting is myself.
A quote that comes to mind is:
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends” – J.K. Rowling
This quote is truly and so important!! Sometimes our friends, and our biggest cheerleaders are the people that block us. This is not a bad thing, but it proves the importance of us being able to choose for ourselves. If an opportunity comes your way and you want it, chase it. Get it, and make it yours!! We make the world what we want it to be, and if your goal is to do something you truly enjoy and love, then do it (within reason, of course).
In that same respect, be supportive of your friends and family members who wish to pursue something that you may not know about or agree with. Do your best to educate yourself about it. The more knowledgable we are, the better citizens of this world we are. Remember that each and every one of us are in control of our own destinies, but that does not mean that we see the world the same way.
As always, be kind, thoughtful, and positive!
